Dr Vijaya (VJ) Venkataraman is a founding Consultant Physician at Neurospine Institute WA and shares a public and private appointment between NSIWA and Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital.
Having obtained her MBBS and MD from India (both with gold medal achievements), she completed a 3-yr training program in cardiology and echocardiogram at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, India. After gaining experience at a large private hospital in Maldives, Dr Venkataraman moved to the UK and completed her MRCP and FRCP.
After her move to Australia in 2006, she worked as a Consultant Physician in multiple hospitals in Tasmania and obtained her FRACP qualifications from John Hunter Hospital in NSW. In 2012, Dr Venkataraman joined Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital as a Senior Consultant Physician with a special interest in Cardiology and provided acute and sub-acute inpatient care while also conducting outpatient Cardiology clinics.
Dr Venkataraman represented WACHS Goldfields in cardiovascular executive advisory committee meetings and became an Associate Professor at RCS, University of WA in 2013. Deeply passionate about teaching, she is actively engaged in mentoring medical students and junior doctors as a medical coordinator with RCS, University of Western Australia, and as a consultant physician and supervisor. She also displays a keen interest in perioperative medicine and post-operative recovery and has a Master’s degree in Perioperative Medicine from Monash University.
Dr Venkataraman serves as a Senior Consultant Physician at Sir Charles Gairdner hospital and St John of God Subiaco hospital and participates on the perioperative physician roster at Mount, Subiaco and Murdoch Hospitals. Her specialty interest also includes lipids and she has a Masters in Lipidology from the National Lipid Association.
Dr Venkataraman specialises in acute medicine with special interest in Cardiology (with a focus on heart failure), complex cardiac conditions in indigenous populations, rheumatic heart disease, and echocardiography.
